Book Review: First Down by Grace Reilly

Updated: Apr 5, 2024

Rating: ★★★

I first picked Reilly's First Down to fill my sports romance craving. I'm happy to say this novel definitely filled that void.

Bex agrees to tutor the new NFL hopeful on her university's football team for a small price. James agrees to fake-date her to convince her cheating ex she's moved on. Though Bex told herself she'd never date another athlete again, she finds herself wanting him more and more with every moment they spend together.

Overall, though lacking in plot, this novel was really good. The vibes were amazing, but this certainly wasn't groundbreaking by any means. First Down was very similar to Elle Kennedy's The Deal in terms of plot (especially one of the main conflicts with one of the MC's parents), but I didn't mind this much. It was an enjoyable read with tons of fluff, but it was largely surface-level. Though it was super insta-love-y, there were tons of cute moments throughout, which I loved.
